Even if you’re the most dedicated tooth brusher and flosser, your teeth require a dental cleaning from a professional at least every six months.
The American Dental Association recommends that everyone, no matter what their age, have a dental exam and hygienic cleaning twice each year. Here at Sunshine Dental, we know that seeing you for these regular visits is the secret to keeping you away for the rest of the year!
Dental Cleanings Ensure Overall Health for Sumter, South Carolina Patients
Science has proven that good oral health facilitates good overall health and well-being. When the mouth is damaged or diseased, germs and infection can spread through the body, bringing on a variety of other problems.
Dental cleanings, which we call prophylaxis, are the only way to remove the tartar buildup that causes gingivitis, or gum disease. The bacteria found in gingivitis is linked with a variety of chronic diseases. Gum disease can — directly or indirectly — lead to pneumonia and bone degeneration, as well as pregnancy complications and other illnesses.
X-Rays and Radiography
At your first visit and periodically thereafter, we will take a basic set of dental X-rays.
This provides us with an insider’s perspective of your teeth, and allows us to see any hidden areas of decay or other problems. Over time, we also can compare your current X-rays to previous ones to detect any long-term changes to your oral health.
We use a variety of state-of-the-art radiography techniques at Sunshine Dental, all of which are safe and precise. Because we use the latest digital technologies, we can store your X-rays electronically or share them with other oral health professionals such as orthodontists or oral surgeons.
After your X-rays, the dentist will visually inspect your mouth, gums and oral tissues, then review your X-rays for any potential problems.
If any problems are noted, we will schedule a follow-up appointment to address them. And just like that, you’re on to see the hygienist.
Dental Cleaning or Prophylaxis
Today’s dental cleaning techniques are quick and easy. Here again, technology is our friend.
The dental hygienist will examine your teeth and gums, then remove any scale or tartar buildup that your teeth may have accumulated. Next comes the part most of our patients enjoy: tooth polishing.
You also can take this opportunity to ask the hygienist any questions you have about your at-home oral care. The dental hygienist can recommend the best toothpaste, dental floss or other oral care products for you and your family. He or she also will be happy to demonstrate the proper techniques for brushing and flossing.
As important as it is for you to see us every six months, your family’s at-home oral care habits are also critical. By practicing effective brushing and flossing techniques and keeping your teeth squeaky clean, your time in the dentist’s — and hygienist’s — chair can be greatly reduced.
Sunshine Dental works together with you and your family members to ensure your ongoing oral health. Call our office today to schedule your next exam and dental cleaning appointment.
